Our commitment to STEM at Gorsemoor
Our pupils growing up in the 21st century will be seeking careers in an environment characterised by change, chance and uncertainty (World Economic Forum, 2018). Findings indicate childhood experiences are foundational in the construction of identity; observations of attitudes towards work within families, cultural stereotypes, and influence of the media may influence children’s meaning of work and in turn their occupational identities and this is why ensuring STEM based learning is highly valued at Gorsemoor.
The computing revolution and major digital creativity initiative is a key driver of our school curriculum as we move forward together to become a centre of digital excellence. With specialist leadership, we aim to be at the forefront of using new technologies to support the next generation of learning.
We believe STEM based learning activities can support our children as unique individuals and encourage exploration, experimentation, risk taking, critical thinking, decision making, and problem solving. We also aim to be proactive in tackling the influence of socio-economic issues that could affect our pupil’s future transition to secondary school and beyond. There is significant research that sets out the challenge of securing sufficient quality and quantity of the STEM skills that both local and national industry and economy need to grow. Our pupils will benefit from the investment of this knowledge as they refine their skills to gain invaluable tools for lifelong learning.
The desired outcomes of a concerted focus on STEM subjects at Gorsemoor include
(i) improved educational outcomes;
(ii) a broadening and raising of pupil career aspirations;
(iii) greater awareness of enterprise and entrepreneurship;
(iv) increased confidence and self-efficacy;
(v) improved understanding of the link between education, qualifications and careers and decreased gender stereotyping;
(vi) and improved social emotional skills and behaviours.
