Art

Welcome to Art at Gorsemoor

It is our belief, that the purpose of education is to provide young people with the knowledge and skills to prepare children for their diverse working lives, build character, teach knowledge for its own intrinsic value and ignite a love of learning.

Here at Gorsemoor, we recognise that art and design is an incredibly powerful force of communication and expression which has the means to inspire others and unite people.

We believe that there should be a continuous involvement in creativity by all of our children. Art is an integral part of their personal development. It enables them to express their ideas, thoughts and feelings in ways which words cannot. In this very busy and complicated world, we also recognise that art also has the power to bring comfort, to soothe and to heal. Providing opportunities for children to engage in their own creativity is very important to us.

Our art and design curriculum provides children with the opportunity to explore six key areas: painting, drawing, sculpture, textiles, printing and collage. Within these units, children are also taught about a variety of inspirational artists and have the opportunity to implement their specific skills and styles. Through our single and mixed age teaching, children revisit and build upon their art knowledge, techniques and skills as they progress through Gorsemoor. Art teaches us about the past, about different locations and cultures. It also helps our children to understand that art is individualistic and can invoke a different response. Building upon our school values of respect, art teaches our children to understand that it is ok to be different and to have different ideas. We encourage our children to develop their technical skills, to have courage, to experiment with their ideas, to make and accept mistakes and to enjoy their success. That is a natural part of creativity.

“Art is not just a subject to learn, but an activity that you can practise with your hands, your eyes, your whole personality.” Quentin Blake
